Session 1
Insurance Procurement – Underwriting Then and Now

From Buyer to Broker to Underwriter and beyond, this session will cover the various transactional steps within the commercial insurance risk chain.  We will explore the evolution of insurance procurement from its roots in the London market to contemporary alternative risk financing techniques. As a vital tool for risk management, insurance has consistently played a crucial role in driving business success and performance, causing the broker’s role to change. Attendees can anticipate an engaging and informative presentation that offers both a historical perspective and a current overview of commercial insurance procurement. The session will feature discussions on emerging market trends, technological innovations, risk transfer strategies, and a forward-looking perspective on the future of the industry.

Speakers

Ryan Keith – Senior VP, Guy Carpenter
Ryan has worked with Guy Carpenter for more than 18 years and is currently an account executive focused on reinsurance strategy and execution for medical, casualty and workers’ compensation lines of business with a specific emphasis on healthcare and energy sectors.

In addition to his traditional insurance clients, Ryan is also active in the captive arena having supported multiple corporate captives to grow and execute a risk financing strategy. He often works collaboratively across the Marsh McLennan organization, supporting various cross-operating company clients and initiatives.

Ryan received his Master’s in Business Administration from Seattle University and graduated with Honors from the Economics Department at the University of Washington. Ryan has also earned his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriting designation.

Shon DeVries – Regional Sales Director, Propel
Shon DeVries, CPCU, CRIS, is the Oregon Regional Sales Director at Propel Insurance. In over 30 years in the insurance and risk management field, he has been an underwriter, insurance broker, corporate risk manager, risk management consultant and an elected public official. As an insurance broker, he helps clients reduce cost of risk through optimizing risk transfer and risk finance systems. Shon has worked with private companies and public agencies to improve their risk management process and consulted on complex project risk management systems for owners and developers in many industry groups, including infrastructure projects, transit projects, tunneling projects, airports, arenas/hospitality/gaming, power and energy, multi-family housing, residential and commercial projects.In addition, Mr. DeVries spent a year developing the Risk Management Department of a large, regional general contractor that included claim management, insurance procurement, subcontractor pre-qualification, contract review and project budget analysis. He enjoys speaking at construction industry functions on a wide range of risk-related topics.

The session will address the inherent risks associated with emerging technologies, emphasizing the need for robust insurance solutions to mitigate these challenges. By understanding these interconnected challenges, participants will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of global transportation and trade in an ever-evolving landscape.

Janice Kowell – Managing Director | Marine, Cargo and Logistics Practice Leader, US and Canada , Marsh
Janice is the Marine, Cargo and Logistics Practice Leader for US and Canada. Having responsibility for 11 offices and approximately 150 colleagues in the US and Canada, she focuses on strategic leadership, client solutions and talent development.

Having joined Marsh’s Marine and Energy Practice in Houston in 1981, Janice transferred to the Pacific Northwest in 1994, settling in Portland. She has worked with a variety of marine industry clients, including vessel builders and repairers, vessel owners and operators, energy companies, utilities and marine construction companies, manufacturers, shippers, charterers, traders, ports, and terminals. She also has extensive contract review experience, assisting clients with contract insurance provisions.

Janice describes herself as a “problem solver” and when she’s not solving marine problems, she enjoys walking, putting together puzzles, hiking with her daughters, traveling with her husband, or playing hide-and-seek with her 15-month-old black lab.

Alex Galvin – Principal Consultant, Galvanized Consulting
Alex Galvan is the Principal Consultant at Galvanized Consulting in Beaverton, Oregon with clients in the Arabian Gulf and Asia. He has previously directed insurance contract management, insurance procurement, and insurance renewals and managed a portfolio of bonds and insurance of over 5 billion in assets for three airports, 4 marine seaports, and 5 industrial parks.

Recently, he served as the Interim Director of Risk Management to design a municipal program and facilitate the talent search for a new director for a large city in South Florida. He is also a trained forensic accounting and fraud examiner and has investigated white collar crimes alongside organizations such as the US Southern District Attorney, the South Florida Task Force on Auto Thefts, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Alex is also a Professional Member of RIMS the Risk Management Society and the CPCU Society and currently serves as the VP, Secretary of the Oregon Chapter of RIMS.

Property Lines – The Evolution of Nat Cat Risk

In keeping with the theme of “The Evolution of Risk Management: Then and Now” this session and presentation will take us back in time to reflect on the early days of property insurance.  We will then bring you into the current property risk environment with an overview of Nat Cat risk, with a focused discussion on earthquake risk.  The session will conclude with a few examples/lessons learned and how to build resilience into your earthquake mitigation and preparedness efforts.

  • Key factors driving Nat Cat losses and business interruptions.
  • Strategies for achieving resilience and recovery after a major earthquake.
  • Pre-event actions that significantly mitigate the severity of earthquake impacts and enhance rapid recovery.

Pranav Sharma is the Client Service Manager of FM’s Seattle Branch. He leads underwriting and client service teams in delivering property insurance programs that protect the value of his clients’ businesses across the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, and Alaska markets.

Prior to his current role, Pranav held positions across several domains of progressive responsibility at FM, including client service and underwriting management, account management, underwriting, and field engineering.

Pranav holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa. He is licensed as a Property and Casualty Producer.

Casualty Lines, from Pollution to Cyber

Speakers

Ron Hayes – Chairman, Pacific Marine & Energy
Ron Hays is a seasoned executive with decades of expertise in insurance, risk management, and data security. As Chairman of Pacific Marine & Energy Resources since 1994, he pioneered the world’s first cyber insurance coverage in 1977 and has consulted on acquisitions, risk management, and program development.

From 2019 to 2022, he served as CEO of EDSI International LLC, focusing on enterprise data security and executive vetting. His career includes leadership roles at Aon Risk Services, Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, and other firms, specializing in marine insurance, mergers, and acquisitions.

Beyond business, Ron is the leader of the Puddin’ River Jazz Band and Puddin’ River Boogie Bands, showcasing his lifelong passion for music. His innovative contributions continue to shape multiple industries.

Raymond A. Mascia Jr. – Shareholder, Anderson Kill P.C.
Raymond A. Mascia Jr. is a shareholder in Anderson Kill’s New York office and co-chairs the firm’s Financial Services group.  Ray represents corporate and governmental policyholders in all types of insurance recovery matters, including matters involving D&O coverage, professional liability coverage, general liability coverage, environmental and asbestos claims, commercial crime insurance, and first-party property and business interruption losses arising from natural disasters and other perils.  Over the course of his career, Ray has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance proceeds for policyholders.

In 2021, Business Insurance recognized Ray as a Break Out Award winner, selecting Ray as one of forty attorneys nationwide.  In 2020, Law360 recognized Ray as a Rising Star in the practice area of Insurance, selecting Ray as 1 of 176 attorneys nationwide.  In addition, The Legal 500 USA recognized Ray as a Next Generation Partner in 2020 and as a Rising Star in 2019.

Tom D’Antono – VP, Management Liability, Chubb Ins.
Tom started his career in 2008 with the ACE (now Chubb) Public Management Liability team in New York and moved with the company to San Francisco in 2010. Since 2017, he has been managing the Public Management Liability team in Chubb’s PacNorth region, including D&O, Employment Practices, Fiduciary, Crime and KRE products. When not working on insurance, Tom can be found wrangling his 3 year old twins.

In addition, Mr. DeVries spent a year developing the Risk Management Department of a large, regional general contractor that included claim management, insurance procurement, subcontractor pre-qualification, contract review and project budget analysis. He enjoys speaking at construction industry functions on a wide range of risk-related topics.

Session 6
Enterprise Risk Management – From Insurance Buyer to Strategic Risk Leader

The Risk Management discipline is diverse and includes professionals whose primary functions include Insurance Procurement, Risk Financing, Claims Management, Loss Control, Safety, Business Continuity, and Enterprise Risk Management.  In this session, we will dive into Enterprise Risk Management and how it can elevate the Risk Manager to a strategic role and also bring visibility to their other functions. 

Enterprise Risk Management is simply a way to ensure the organization’s risks are managed in a way that is consistent with the organization’s overall risk appetite.  In this session we will explore ways in which risks are identified, how they are scored and tracked, and ownership and accountability.   We will also discuss leadership involvement, coordination with other groups within the organization (i.e. Internal Audit, Legal, etc.) and reporting to the Board of Directors. 

We hope this session provides you with tools for a successful ERM program and elevates your visibility and the important work you do within your organization.

Ken Ott – Risk Manager, The Greenbrier Group
Ken Ott has 30 years of Risk Management experience including oversight of global risk/insurance programs, Enterprise Risk Management, Business Continuity Management, and Claims Management.  His current role is in the heavy manufacturing space but has also worked in risk management with a large transportation company, assisted clients as an Account Executive with a large broker, and has worked for Claims Management firms.

Ismail Warsame – Senior Risk Analyst, Port of Portland
Ismail Warsame, M.Ed., PMP, is a seasoned leader with over a decade of experience in program management, risk mitigation, and policy analysis. As Enterprise Risk Manager at the Port of Portland, he oversees the ERM program for aviation, marine operations, Columbia River dredging, and business parks while leading the business continuity management. He also manages a FEMA-funded BCM enhancement project.

Previously, Ismail spent 12 years at Oregon State University, overseeing crisis management, compliance, student success initiatives, and major grants. Internationally, he has represented Somalia at key conferences, including the 2023 Arab-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce event in Athens Greece, where he delivered a keynote on Somali ports.
